The Billion-Step Challenge
At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina CEO supported wellness challenges are hosted each year that engage over 50 percent of the population. For the past two years we have noticed the need for Increased physical activity In the workplace and have focused our programs around this. In 2014, the Ready Step Go! Program gave over 3,000 employees Fitbits, where over a six month period employees walked over 250,000 miles. With employees being more familiar and comfortable with the FitBit, our 2015 Billion Step Challenge continued to use the technology to track BCBSNC employees, friends, and families steps as they work together to achieve 1 billion steps. In total, participants completed 1,119,534,430 billion steps, over 33 mtlllon active minutes and covered enough miles to go around the Earth 20 times in just six months. Participants who engaged in the program experienced an overall average increase In steps and minutes of physical activity. When looking at the month prior to the launch of the challenge in comparison to the last month, participants increased their average step count per day by 1,014 steps. The overall population increased physical activity with 14.3 percent of participations meeting the 10,000 steps per day goal the month prior to the program to 21 percent reaching this goal by the end of the program. Our 2015 Biometric Screening results showed that 41 percent of employees who wore a Fitbit lost weight throughout the year and were more likely to lose 5 percent of their body weight.
