Breast Health and Wellness: The Moffitt Difference
February is National Cancer Prevention Month. Studies show that currently one out of every three cancer cases could possibly have been prevented through simple lifestyle changes including eating a nutritious diet, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy body weight. In addition to helping prevent cancer, these measures can also reduce the risk of several serious and chronic health conditions, including heart disease and diabetes.
In keeping with Moffitt's mission to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer, the McKinley Breast Center held a community event targeting women who have not been diagnosed with breast cancer. 'Breast Health and Wellness: The Moffitt Difference' was held on February 11th This event was designed to educate women about breast health and how they can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer through screening and healthy lifestyle choices.
The day included screening mammograms, lectures by Moffitt experts and workshops on nutrition, acupuncture, massage, yoga meditation, genetics and diagnostic imaging. Nurses were on hand to answer questions on topics such as osteoporosis, sun safety and smoking cessation. Guests were treated to a healthy lunch and were able to visit with a variety of vendors who exemplified fitness and wellness (including YMCA, Fit Life Foods etc.)
We had approximately 100 people at the event including Moffitt team members and women from the community interested in finding ways to take proactive steps to prevent cancer and improve their health. The event received such great feedback that Moffitt will be doing it again next year in hopes to have any even large number of participants from both our team members and our local community.
