Discover Europe: Walking for Health and Wellness

The health and wellness initiative at AlphaMed Press focuses on fostering increased physical activity and sharing information on healthier diet options in a supportive and interactive team environment.   Keeping in mind that physical activity, like walking, can improve health and fitness by helping lose body fat and helping to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain cancers.  AlphaMed Press conducted its first program, “Discover Europe: Walking for Health and Wellness” in 2015.

During the course of this 12 week program, AlphaMed Press took a virtual journey through 12 European countries, exploring spectacular sites and learning interesting facts about the local culture and traditions of each country. This program challenged our walkers to meet a set number of steps each week, increasing over time.  We were pleased that 92% of our employees participated. The goal was to walk a total of 495,000 steps per individual during the 12 weeks, starting with 30,000 steps the 1st week and building up to 50,000 steps by the 12th week (a 60% increase). In fact, we exceeded our goal by 5% with 5,184,386 collective steps equaling 2,592 miles (the distance from Durham to California’s state border).  The top walker logged 513 miles during her 12-week trek. To celebrate each week’s accomplishments and motivate continuous improvement, the team gathered for lunch weekly to enjoy a sampling of each country’s cuisine made by the hikers, with the goal of focusing on healthier diet options.
