The Hitchhiker's Guide to Route 66

The health and wellness initiative at AlphaMed Press focuses on fostering increased physical activity and sharing information on healthier diet options in a supportive and interactive team environment. Physical activity, like walking, can improve health and fitness by helping lose body fat and helping to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain cancers. AlphaMed Press conducted its second wellness program, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to Route 66" in 2016.

At the beginning of the program, each team member received a complimentary water bottle to encourage more water consumption during our trip. Our virtual journey along Route 66 started in Chicago, Illinois and lasted 12 weeks. We visited eight different states and ended the fitness expedition in Santa Monica, CA. We spent a few days in each state learning about the different sites that surround Route 66 and sampling some of the local cuisine. The famous Route 66 stretches 2,451 miles and to successfully complete the program, each team member had a goal of 8,000-10,000 steps per day. As a group, we exceeded our goal by walking 5,699,134 steps! In order to keep the motivation going and fuel our bodies, a healthy lunch was provided as well as an assortment of fruit to infuse each team member's water. We successfully achieved our goals of increased water consumption and exercise in addition to the promotion of healthy eating habits.
