From the Mountains to the Sea

The health and wellness initiative at AlphaMed Press focuses on fostering increased physical activity in a supportive and interactive team environment.

Physical activity, such as walking, bicycling, and swimming, can improve health and fitness by helping lose body fat and helping to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain cancers.  AlphaMed Press conducted its third wellness program, 'From the Mountains to the Sea', in the spring and summer of 2017.

For this year's challenge we decided to take a virtual journey through our home state of North Carolina by traveling along the well-known Mountains to the Sea trail, a simple footpath stretching almost 1,200 miles across North Carolina from Clingman's Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks. Split into teams of two, each team member had a goal of 6,000 - 10,000 steps per day. We also included a sheet of conversions of other physical activities to steps, so each team member could choose which activity suited them best. As a group we walked a total 5,605,896 steps and covered 2803 miles! Not only did we achieve our goals of increased physical fitness, we also learned about places in our very own home state where we could go for real walks in the woods.
