Gold Standard Employer: BD
Tobacco Free Worksites
BD's purpose is "advancing the world of health" and we are committed to providing a tobacco free work environment to support the health and vitality of our associates. Since 2011, BD has embraced the "Five Pillars" of the Gold Standard and is proud to provide a tobacco-free worksite for all US associates. As part of that commitment, we are excited to announce that in November 2016, we transitioned all 17 US CareFusion worksites to a tobacco-free work environment. (CareFusion was acquired by BD in March of 2015.)
All "designated smoking tables" were decommissioned and removed; and new "Tobacco Free Campus" signs were put in their place. To reinforce the importance of this commitment, and to underscore support from the senior leaders of our organization, this expanded policy was communicated by BD's Chairman, CEO and President, Vince Forlenza, in conjunction with World No Tobacco Day on May 31, 2016. This all-company communication from Mr. Forlenza was sent via email to all associates and was prominently posted to the company-wide intranet. His letter explained the policy, the reasons behind it, and shared resources that associates can access for help in quitting tobacco for good. Mr. Forlenza also highlighted this Tobacco Free Campus policy at an all-company Town Hall.
In order to inspire and empower associates to successfully quit tobacco, from May-November 2016, we executed a robust and multi-modal health promotion campaign that included posters with associate testimonials, resource flyers, home mailings, onsite tobacco cessation workshops (in both English and Spanish) and a fun and engaging "Great American Smoke-Out" challenge that enabled associates to earn a FitBit for quitting tobacco or committing to a healthy habit. Furthermore, we deployed a new monthly wellness newsletter, which is sent to all 16,000 US associates, and features articles and resources on tobacco cessation, emotional health, financial well-being, preventive care and physical health ... all with the goal of assisting associates in achieving their wellness goals.
Since the prevention and early detection of illness and disease is a key priority of the BD Healthy Lives wellness program, associates and their spouses can also earn an additional $520 deposit in a Health Savings account for completing an annual preventive exam or well woman exam with their physician. Thanks to these efforts, 40% of our associates completed a preventive exam in 2016, compared to only 20% in 2015! BD also offers annual flu shot clinics, onsite wellness fairs and promotes events such as "Wear Red Day" to promote heart health, "World Diabetes Day" and Employee Well-Being Month to ensure associates are engaged in their health.
